11-Year-Old Demari Johnson Shot and Left in Critical Condition After Shooting at Golden Glide Skating Rink in DeKalb County, Georgia
Late Saturday evening, April 9, 2022, a fight erupted inside Golden Glide Skating Rink on Wesley Road in Decatur, Georgia. The fight spilled into the parking lot during which time shots were fired. 11-year-old Demari Johnson was caught in the crossfire and severely injured. He is currently in critical condition. His father was outside in the parking lot waiting for his son when the shooting occurred.
The Johnson Family has provided police and media outlets with cell phone video that was posted on social media. According to the family, you can see Demari in white pants and a dark hoodie running with a group of other people across the parking lot.
Demari’s grandmother, Stephanie Johnson, told news outlets that there was security at the rink, but they did not step in. “If there was a confrontation on the inside why didn’t security call the parents then?” Johnson said. DeKalb County Police is investigating the incident.
How Can Commercial Properties and Security Companies Improve Safety and Prevent Crime?
Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced crime victim lawyer, represents crime victims and gunshot victims injured or killed in shootings, stabbings, and assaults at commercial and residential properties.
“Entertainment centers like skating rinks can be hot spots for crime. This is why Golden Glide prohibits any kind of weapon on the premises. When a fight originates inside a commercial property, the last thing a security officer or business owner should do is push the problem outside into a parking lot. Instead, business owners and security officers should contact law enforcement immediately and ensure those involved in the violence are escorted off the premises. It is common sense.”
