On Thursday night, April 7, 2022, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Portland Police responded to a shooting near the intersection of NW Burnside and NW 6th Avenue in Downtown Portland. There, police found a victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Although first responders attempted lifesaving measures, the victim tragically passed away at the scene.

Who Can Be Held Liable After A Shooting?

Legal writer, Attorney Danny Dalton, an experienced crime victim lawyer, regularly represents crime victims, gunshot victims, and those injured or killed in shootings, stabbings, and assaults at commercial properties.

Owners and operators of commercial properties have a legal responsibility to keep the premises safe and protect customers, patrons, and their guests from foreseeable third-party criminal acts. Whether a convenience store, gas station, nightclub, bar, motel, or apartment complex, business operators must take reasonable steps to keep their property safe.

Certain security measures consistently help deter crime. For example, sufficient lighting, visible and functioning video cameras, controlled-access gates, security cameras, and security or courtesy officers all help deter crime. If the landowner or management company fails to take reasonable steps to address known problems of crime, a guest who is shot or attacked at a dangerous property can file a civil lawsuit against the owners and operators.

Questions to ask after a shooting like this:

The families of gun violence victims are almost always left with an endless list of questions after such a sudden tragedy. Some of the questions to consider early include:

Where, specifically, did this happen?

Is this a property or area with a known history of crime?

What security measures did the businesses have in place to deter crime?
