Drownings Continue in South Carolina

Drowning_

Drownings continue in South Carolina at a rapid pace. This summer has seen multiple, high-profile drowning incidents involving both locals and tourists. Although people continue to flock to South Carolina’s many incredible beaches, serious safety concerns are being raised about these locations. If a drowning incident has claimed the life of someone you love, a South Carolina wrongful death attorney may be able to help you achieve closure and justice.

South Carolina Man Allegedly Drowns After Jumping Off Boat

In early August of 2025, Berkeley County officials reported that a man had jumped off a boat before drowning. The man reportedly jumped off a boat to swim in Lake Moultrie, but he never resurfaced. Instead, his body was retrieved from the lake with fatal injuries. The death is still being investigated by the authorities, as the exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

While this may have been a diving accident, it is worth noting that Lake Moultrie has a depth of 75 feet in some places. The victim was a 58-year-old South Carolina resident who probably knew these waters well.

Man Drowns at North Myrtle Beach

Another shocking incident occurred when a 69-year-old man visiting North Myrtle Beach drowned. The man was pulled from the shore in an unresponsive state by other beachgoers. Although first responders were quick to arrive, it immediately became clear that the man had no pulse and was not breathing.

WHKY notes that the man had a triple bypass surgery in 2019, and this could have been a factor in his passing. However, one has to wonder whether there were any lifeguards on duty, and whether people should have been watching the man as he swam and subsequently drowned.

Woman Drowns Near Myrtle Beach Resort

Within days of that incident, another woman in her 50s drowned near a Myrtle Beach resort. Officials say that she was “pulled from the ocean” in a lifeless state, and although she was rushed to the nearest hospital by first responders, she ultimately passed away from asphyxiation. The incident marks the third drowning in as many weeks in South Carolina, and there could be more as the summer continues.

It is not clear whether the incident occurred on the premises of a beach resort, or whether the woman merely drowned “nearby” the premises.

Can a South Carolina Wrongful Death Attorney Help After a Drowning?

If you have lost a family member due to a drowning in South Carolina, you might want to speak with a wrongful death attorney. Depending on the circumstances of the incident, this could lead to a premises liability case. If this type of legal action is possible, families may receive compensation for funeral expenses, missed future earnings, grief, and other damages.
