A 42-year-old Box Truck Driver with a Suspended License Strikes and Kills Man in a Wheelchair on Saturday Morning in Queens.
NBC New York reports that a fatal accident occurred on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at around 9a.m. in Queens.
At the time of the accident, a 73-year-old man in a wheelchair was attempting to cross Central Avenue at Naneoke Avenue in the Far Rockaway neighborhood.
Surveillance footage shows the man attempting to cross the street while the truck waits for a red light. The box truck then pulls ahead and strikes the man. Medics transported the man to St. John’s Hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead.
The driver of the box truck had a suspended license.
“Commercial drivers are professional drivers – they drive large, dangerous equipment ordinary drivers aren’t used to. They must be adequately trained and possess the requisite knowledge and skill to operate such vehicles. That this driver would operate this vehicle without a proper license is unacceptable. Even more, it is critical that commercial drivers are aware of their surroundings at all times, especially when driving in urban areas like Queens where there are lots of pedestrians.”
What Should I Do When I Or A Loved One Have Been Involved In A Trucking Accident?
“When an accident like this occurs, it is important that key evidence is not lost or destroyed. This includes: witness testimony, dash and body cam footage from responding officers, dash cam video from the truck involved, electronic black box data from all vehicles involved, cell phone usage and data of the at-fault truck driver, toxicology reports, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, etc.”
