Dangerous Motel? Shooting at Western Inn in Tacoma, WA Leaves One Dead

On May 21, 2022, Saturday evening at around 9 p.m., police responded to a shooting at the Western Inn at 9920 South Tacoma Way in Tacoma, Washington. There, police found a woman in her 50s shot with serious injuries. Despite attempts to save her life, the victim eventually succumbed to her injuries. According to the motel manager, the victim had been staying at the motel since December 2021. Witnesses suggest that a man shot the woman in the head and chest, which led to her falling down a flight of stairs. The murder marks at least 44 homicides in Pierce County so far this year, meaning the county is on track to far outpace the 65 homicides that happened in all of 2021. To date, police have yet to arrest the assailant. The investigation is ongoing.

Unfortunately, the Western Inn does not appear to be a stranger to crime. One former guest at the Western Inn writes, “Beside waking up to shot guns. This is a hotel from Hell.” Another guest adds, “Full of prostitutes drug dealers in almost every room.”

How to Prevent Violence at Motels and Hotels?

Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced crime victim lawyer, represents crime victims and gunshot victims injured or killed in shootings, stabbings, and assaults at hotels, motels, and other commercial properties.

“Motels or hotels can be hot spots for crime and the out-of-town guests staying there oftentimes have no idea what they are walking into. I always encourage guests to read the reviews. Poor lighting conditions and loitering are key signs that danger may be near. The hospitality industry has a responsibility to their guests to provide a clean and safe environment. This is best achieved where there is adequate lighting, cameras, and security patrols.”
