Northwoods Mall Shooting Stemmed from “Prior Altercation” at High School
Police say that the recent shooting at Northwoods Mall stemmed from a prior altercation that occurred two years prior at high school. Both individuals involved in this encounter coincidentally ran into each other at the mall, and the aggressor shot the victim while the latter was walking down a sidewalk. The sidewalk was on the premises of Northwoods Mall.
Fortunately, the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. However, Live 5 News failed to provide any additional information about the gunshot injuries. A few days later, the assailant turned himself in. The 18-year-old now faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Northwoods Mall has a long history of shootings. In 2021, three people were shot at the mall. In 2023, two people sued the mall in connection with the 2021 incident. The plaintiffs alleged that the owners failed to implement a proper security plan. The lawsuit also noted that the owners failed to remove dangerous individuals from the premises prior to the shooting.
The Importance of Establishing a History of Violence in Negligent Security Cases
When pursuing a negligent security lawsuit, it is often helpful to establish a “history of violence” at the relevant location. A history of violence indicates that the owners were aware of dangerous behavior on their premises and yet did nothing to prevent it.
A “history of violence” is the exact phrase authorities used to describe past incidents at a South Carolina bar. This bar experienced a mass shooting on October 12th, 2025, and the incident left four people dead. An additional 15 people were injured in the shooting. Authorities also described the establishment as a “nuisance,” stating that the owners repetitively exhibited an inability to manage large crowds.
Can a South Carolina Negligent Security Lawyer Help Me?
A South Carolina negligent security lawyer may be able to help if you were caught in the crossfire of a mall shooting. The owner of a mall has a legal duty of care to protect members of the public from armed, dangerous people. If they fail in this duty of care and you get hurt as a result, you have the right to consider legal action.
