Rules of the Road – Commercial Vehicles Must Constantly Be Aware of Their Surroundings

Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced truck accident lawyer, represents victims injured or killed in a tractor-trailer and semi-truck accidents. Below, Attorney Mickelsen shared his insight into the legal options available to victims injured in commercial truck accidents.

“According to the news articles, the tractor-trailer crossed the center line and hit the SUV head-on. Drivers of commercial vehicles, like the driver of the tractor-trailer, are held to specific standards. These standards are even higher than the average vehicle on the road. Drivers of commercial vehicles operate heavy equipment that can cause serious damage. Because of the dangerous nature of the vehicles they operate, it is imperative that drivers of such vehicles pay attention. Lack of sleep, a distraction from phones and devices, etc. is unacceptable.”

What Should I Do When I Or A Loved One Have Been Involved In A Trucking Accident?

“In the wake of such a horrific event, it is critically important that key evidence is not lost or destroyed – this includes witness testimony, dash and body cam footage from responding officers, dash cam from the truck involved, hours of service logs for the at-fault truck driver, electronic black box data from all vehicles involved, vehicle inspections from the at-fault truck, toxicology reports, etc.”
