Multiple Drownings Confirmed in South Carolina

Over the past few days, multiple people have drowned in South Carolina. Some of these accidents occurred on the beach, others at pools, and some at lakes. Regardless of the specifics, each one of these drownings represents a tragedy for the victims’ families. What can you do if your loved one drowned in South Carolina? Is it possible to file a wrongful death lawsuit?
Father Drowns at Hilton Head’s South Beach
In late July of 2025, multiple sources confirmed that a 49-year-old father had drowned while swimming at Hilton Head’s South Beach. The man was swimming with his son when they were both caught in a strong current that carried them out to sea. Although first responders quickly brought the man and his son back to the beach with flotation devices, he was unresponsive when he reached the sand. First responders eventually pronounced him dead.
The only silver lining is that his son survived. According to The Island Packet, the normal lifeguards had ended their shift before this accident occurred. This is the fourth drowning in Beaufort County this summer, and some say that safety standards need to improve.
SLED Investigating Drowning of Toddler in Surfside Beach Pool
Also in late July, SLED announced an official investigation into the drowning of a toddler at a Surfside Beach pool. The incident occurred at the child’s home, in a private pool. The two-year-old died after reaching a hospital, with the official cause of death being asphyxiation. Like Beaufort County, Myrtle Beach has also seen its fair share of drownings this summer. Last month, a child drowned in a retention pond.
Teen Dies After Lake Murray Accident
In related news, a teenager lost his life after an accident on Lake Murray, Saluda County. The 17-year-old fell into the water from a small boat, and his body was eventually recovered by diving teams. It is unclear whether the teen drowned or if he suffered some other kind of injury before falling into the water. Authorities say that they have scheduled an autopsy.
Toddler Found Unresponsive in Anderson County Pool
On July 30th of 2025, WYFF 4 reported that a toddler had died after drowning in a pool. The incident occurred at the child’s home in Anderson County, and police say there is “no sign” of child neglect or abuse.
Can I File a Wrongful Death Lawsuit After a Drowning in South Carolina?
It may be possible to file a wrongful death lawsuit in South Carolina if your loved one drowned. The string of recent incidents across the state highlights how common these accidents can be. However, many of these accidents also show a worrying lack of reasonable safety policies at various beaches, pools, and other areas. Discuss your situation with the Charleston wrongful death lawyers at Mickelsen & Dalton, LLC – and determine whether a lawsuit might be possible.
