A major accident involving 13 vehicles has occurred in Colleton County, and this incident has claimed numerous lives. Pileups such as these serve as a stark reminder of how dangerous our roads can be. Victims and their families deserve not only closure, but also compensation and justice. To pursue these goals after a major accident, families may wish to contact experienced car accident lawyers in South Carolina.

Nightmarish Images From I-95 Pileup

In July of 2025, multiple sources reported a major pileup on I-95 in South Carolina. Images from the scene show at least two semi-trucks with a literal wall of smashed cars between them. The twisted metal reached higher than both semi-trucks, and one can only imagine what the people inside these vehicles experienced during the collision. Two occupants – a father and son – perished in the pileup.

Authorities say that there were separate crashes that day. The first involved one semi-truck and three smaller vehicles. The resulting traffic congestion caused a second collision, and this was the crash that claimed multiple lives. 13 vehicles were involved in this second pileup, including a staggering six semi-trucks. It is not clear why so many semi-trucks were operating so close to each other on I-95.

Along with the two deceased victims, nine others suffered various injuries, and all required immediate hospitalization. The crash shut down I-95 for 11 hours. To make things even worse, one of the semi-trucks was hauling plate glass, and this cargo was ejected onto the road. First responders say that they had to wade through this broken glass while trying to rescue victims, and in some places the shards lay in piles two feet deep.

One of the victims freed himself from the wreckage of his vehicle – only to fall off the bridge and into the Combahee River. Fortunately, he was able to swim to safety and survived the ordeal.

What Caused the Crash?

The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation. Authorities say that a heavy thunderstorm probably contributed to the crash, as drivers were struggling with almost zero visibility at the time. Officials say that they are in the process of meticulously reconstructing the accident, and they may be able to provide more answers to victims and their families in the coming days.
