South Carolina School Sued After Student Suffers Finger Amputation

Liability11

A South Carolina middle school is facing an injury lawsuit after a student allegedly lost her fingertip. The child’s mother states that the victim suffered this amputation injury in South Carolina because of inadequate supervision and substandard first aid protocols. What if your child suffered a similar type of amputation at school? Can you also file a personal injury lawsuit against the school?

Staff Members Allegedly Threw Severed Finger “In the Trash”

In January of 2026, WRDW reported that the mother of a middle school student was filing a lawsuit against the school district after an incident involving a severed finger. The incident occurred years earlier in 2024, and it left the victim without her fingertip.

The lawsuit states that as the student was returning from the restroom, another student closed a heavy door on her hand, causing a crush injury. Not only did the impact fracture her ring finger, but it also completely severed the tip.

In the aftermath of the accident, school district employees reacted in an allegedly improper way. Specifically, the staff members threw the severed fingertip into the trash. The plaintiff points out that this completely ruined the chances of re-attaching the fingertip with help from medical professionals. The mother argues that this incident would not have happened if the students had been sufficiently supervised by the staff members.

WCJL notes that the student who slammed the door onto the victim’s hand had somehow left the classroom without first obtaining a hall pass. The victim, on the other hand, obtained a hall pass before leaving for the bathroom. From the wording of this complaint, it seems as if the other student slammed the door on the victim intentionally.

Finger Amputations Can Change Your Life Forever

Compared to a leg or an arm, an amputated finger might not seem like a major issue. However, it can affect a victim’s life in notable ways. Without all of their fingers, a victim might struggle to type at a computer or on a phone. They might also lose dexterity for tasks like knitting, sewing, or related tasks that require detailed attention. As a result, a finger amputation can lead to financial losses in the form of lost income.

An amputated finger is also a form of disfigurement. A victim (especially a young woman) might become self-conscious about their amputated finger, and this may seriously affect their psychological well-being and their quality of life.
