Wrong-Way, Head-On Collisions Cause Mayhem in South Carolina

WrongWay_

A head-on collision in South Carolina is one of the worst types of accidents anyone can experience. These crashes put drivers and passengers at the mercy of tremendous physical forces, often ending in critical or fatal injuries. Two recent incidents in South Carolina highlight how dangerous these crashes can be, and they may lead to auto accident lawsuits. If you have suffered injuries in a head-on collision, consider a consultation with a South Carolina personal injury lawyer.

Three Fatalities Confirmed After Wrong-Way Crash in Spartanburg County

In June of 2025, multiple sources reported a fatal wrong-way crash on I-85. The accident occurred in Spartanburg County, and it led to three fatalities. Police say that at about midnight, the driver of a Honda sedan was driving into oncoming traffic when it collided with two vehicles. The first of these vehicles was a Toyota sedan with two occupants. Both of these occupants died in the impact. The second vehicle was a Ford SUV, and all five occupants of this vehicle were completely uninjured. The single occupant of the Honda sedan also passed away.

There was no word on why the Honda driver was heading into oncoming traffic at the time of the crash. Based on the wording of reports, it seems as though this vehicle had been heading down the wrong side of the highway for some time before the collision. In other words, the driver did not suddenly veer across the median before causing the accident. Although the circumstances of the crash are still under investigation, the driver might have entered the wrong side of the highway due to confusion, distraction, or intoxication.

Officers noted that this adds to the alarming tally of fatal traffic incidents in Spartanburg County. Local law enforcement also warned the general public to drive more carefully, wear their seat belts, and avoid misconduct like drunk driving and distractions.

Deputy and Driver Narrowly Escape Injury After Head-On Collision

A similar incident occurred recently in Richland County, and it almost severely injured or killed a deputy and a driver. The incident occurred after a traffic stop in June, which left a police vehicle and a civilian vehicle in the yellow median section of a major road. While both vehicles were parked, an out-of-control sedan approached and veered into the median. It then collided head-on with the civilian vehicle and pushed it back into the police cruiser. The crash was caught in clear detail by the cruiser’s dashcam.
