Wrongful Death Lawsuits Filed After Numerous Teen Deaths in South Carolina

WD_

Although all deaths in the family are difficult, losing a child can be particularly distressing. While it’s true that teens tend to engage in more risky behavior, their fatal accidents are often caused by negligent individuals – including reckless drivers. Recent teen fatalities have sparked wrongful death lawsuits in South Carolina, and these cases expose the various dangers faced by young people today.

Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit After Teens Killed in Crash

In December of 2024, various sources reported that a family was suing a drunk driver for allegedly causing a fatal accident in Spartanburg County. The accident occurred in September of 2024, and it killed three teens aged 15, 17, and 18. Police said that the minors were heading down Henderson Road as passengers in a sedan when the driver of a pickup truck reversed out of a driveway and into the path of the sedan.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, the driver of the sedan swerved before striking a mailbox and crashing into a ditch. Police say that the sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed (100 miles per hour), and that it overturned before finally coming to a halt and bursting into flames. The driver was the only person in the sedan who survived, and he was charged with three counts of reckless homicide. Police also say that he was driving without a valid license.

The mother of two of the deceased teens decided to sue the driver and his family. She also named the driver of the pickup truck in their lawsuit, alleging that they reversed onto the road in an unsafe manner. The family’s personal injury lawyer states that the parents of the driver allowed him to drive the vehicle while knowing he lacked a proper license or necessary experience.

Teen Dies After Questionable Accident at Fun Park

Also in December of 2024, a 17-year-old employee of a fun park in Greenville died after a questionable accident involving a forklift and a go-kart. The teen was driving the go-kart when it crashed into the forklift, causing fatal injuries.

It quickly became clear that the teen’s family had retained a lawyer, and that they were considering legal action. Even though the family is likely eligible to file a workers’ compensation claim and seek death benefits, they might also be considering a wrongful death lawsuit for gross negligence.
