41-year-old Ronnie Albea was shot and killed during an armed robbery at a Walmart off Harrison Road in Macon, Georgia. According to the Bibb County Sherriff’s Office, Albea was involved in an altercation when two suspects tried to rob his fiancé of her car keys in the Walmart parking lot.
Senseless gun violence continues to rise in Georgia. Shopping centers and parking lots are known hot spots for violence. Based on the above facts, it is clear this was an attempted carjacking – a crime of opportunity. Crimes of opportunity are deterrable.
What Can Businesses Do to Combat the Violence?
Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced wrongful death lawyer, has represented many families of those killed or injured by the actions or negligence of others. Mr. Mickelsen offered the following commentary on Georgia’s growing violence:
“Businesses play in an important part in addressing Georgia’s gun violence problem. Far too often, business owners allow crime, loitering, vandalism, and drug activity to happen on their property without addressing it. What appears to be a non-violent crime, in the matter of seconds, can turn deadly. This is precisely why businesses should maintain open lines of communication with local law enforcement. Request the crime stats. Stay informed about what happens on your property. Trespass loiters and dangerous persons. Maintain adequate lighting. Clean up the graffiti. Install cameras that actually work. And hire a security guard where necessary.”
